A microcement floor runs from room to room without a break. No threshold strips at doorways, no grout grid pulling the eye. In a knocked-through ground floor it makes the space read as one room rather than three.

Because it builds at roughly 2–3mm rather than the 15–20mm of a tiled build-up, it rarely causes door clearance or level problems. It goes over existing tile, screed, concrete and suitable timber, so in most renovations nothing has to come up.

It works with underfloor heating, and because the layer is thin the heat comes through faster than it would through stone or thick tile.

  • No thresholds or transitions between rooms
  • Thin build, so door clearances and floor levels usually stay as they are
  • Laid over existing floors in most cases — no strip-out, no skip
  • Faster heat transfer than stone or thick tile over underfloor heating

Common Questions

Worth knowing before you commit

Microcement moves with whatever is beneath it. A stable, properly prepared substrate won’t crack. An unstable one will, regardless of what goes on top. This is exactly why the survey isn’t optional and why a cheap quote that skips preparation costs more in the end.

Sometimes, but timber moves and it depends entirely on the construction, deflection and fixings. It often needs overboarding first. I’d rather assess it properly than promise it blind.

The Top 2K polyurethane sealer carries the scratch, impact and detergent resistance, which is what makes it viable in kitchens, hallways and commercial floors.

No. It’s applied by hand, so there is tonal movement across the surface. If you want complete uniformity you want a manufactured product, not microcement — better you hear that now than at handover.

Yes. Stairs, landings and skirting details can carry the same finish so the circulation reads as one surface.
